The German battery of Azeville was built from 1941. Its implantation marked the beginning of the presence of the Germans on the coast of Manche. It was built very close to the village of Azeville and will use a camouflage of painted stone to be confronted with houses of the village.
More than 300 meters of gallery of which half underground connected the casemates to different shelters, bunkers, station of defense of the battery and block of electrical production. Located quite inland and not having a direct view of the sea, the firing direction bunker was in Crisbecq.
From the night of June 5 to 6, 1944, Azeville's battery was taken after combat by a group of paratroopers of the allied troops who had fallen by mistake. At Pointe du Hoc, rockets and bombs turned the plateau into a moonlike landscape. This site is a testimony to the terrible battle that took place there between June 6th and June 8th.
On June 6th 1944 at 7:11 am, the 225 men of Lieutenant colonel James Rudder's 2nd Rangers batallion landed on the shingle shore at the bottom of the cliff. . Their mission was to climb up the cliff and to destroy the six 155mm guns.
The site had been bombed several times but the SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) was afraid of the possibility that it could still be operational.
The Rangers climbed up the cliff under heavy fire and loads of grenades. Supported by the destroyers, they succeeded in reaching the top and first discovered empty gun emplacements. Later, a patrol discovered more guns hidden in an orchard 800 meters further inland and destroyed them. Rudder's men, who had been left on their own, repelled many attacks for two days. When the troops coming from Omaha finally met them, only 90 of them could still fight.
A museum like no other on the coast! Surrounded by key memorials dedicated to the landings of 6th June 1944 and the Battle of Normandy, this museum is very educational. Created by Nicolas Leloup in honour of the men and women of the time and in memory of his father Michel, the museum is a showcase for a collection that was carefully constituted over almost half a century. Displayed at first in Falaise, this "treasure of war" finally found a home opposite the vast American cemetery at Omaha Beach (which you can visit when you leave the museum).
One feels very small in the middle of this space, facing the seemingly disproportionate yet real size (scale 1:1) vehicles which include tanks and artillery guns ... Presented in chronological order, civilian and military scenes have been reconstructed with stunning realism, displaying models and objects of everyday life.
The immersion is complete thanks to archive recordings which take visitors back to the painful period of war. The museum collection is very impressive (10 000 pieces and objects as well as 35 German and Allied vehicles); the set-ups give much to think about, especially in these troubled times. The fruit of man's intelligence, know-how and technology is overwhelming. Yet a sentence resounds as we depart: why is intelligence so often used for the service of war?
The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations.
On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.
The memorial consists of a semicircular colonnade with a loggia at each end containing large maps and narratives of the military operations; at the center is the bronze statue, “Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves.” An orientation table overlooking the beach depicts the landings in Normandy. Facing west at the memorial, one sees in the foreground the reflecting pool; beyond is the burial area with a circular chapel and, at the far end, granite statues representing the United States and France.
« On the initiative of Raymond TRIBOULET, France's first sub-prefect after the Liberation » the permanent exhibition on the Normandy Landings was officially opened on June 5th 1954 in Arromanches by Monsieur René COTY, the then President of the French Republic. It was the first museum to be built in commemoration of June 6th 1944 and the Normandy Campaign. The D-day Museum overlooks the very spot where one of the Mulberry Harbours was constructed and where its remains can still be seen today, just a few hundred metres from the shore.
Although the Allies did not have a single port in Normandy on the evening of June 6th, they had had the ingenious idea of building two harbours completely from scratch, using components manufactured in England, towed across the Channel and assembled off the coast. This was Operation Mulberry. No fewer than 40,000 people had worked on these different components in the run-up to D-Day. Arromanches was liberated in the evening of June 6th and the very next day the first ships were scuttled.
June 8th saw the submersion of the first Phoenix caissons and June 14th the unloading of the first cargoes. Totally operational by the beginning of July, the Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches was to prove its worth during Montgomery's large-scale offensive against Caen later that month. During its busiest week, more than 18,000 tonnes of goods were unloaded each day. The remains of the artificial port can still be seen off Arromanches and several dozen PHOENIX caissons continue to provide a calm and sheltered stretch of water. A true feat of engineering, the port at Arromanches provided the key to victory in Europe.
The Memorial Pegasus is dedicated to the men of 6th Airborne Division and their role during the Battle of Normandy from June to September 1944. Guided visits, within a thematically laid out exhibition hall, enable the visitors to discover the missions of the division. Missions carried out before the seaborne landings on the beaches in June 1944, The Longest Day. The original Bénouville Bridge, renamed Pegasus Bridge after the liberation, is on display in the park of the museum along with a Bailey bridge and a full size copy of a wartime Horsa glider.
The Memorial Pegasus is dedicated to the men of 6th British Airborne Division, “the Red Berets”. The missions for the division on June 6th 1944 are presented in the museum. The division, commanded by Major General Richard Gale, was composed of parachutists and glider borne troops these men being transported in Horsa or Hamilcar gliders.
The division had to hold the eastern flank of the invasion forces and to stop German counter attacks coming from the east.
This mission was carried out in three ways:
The bridges across the River Orne and the Caen canal had to be captured and held intact to enable the seaborne reinforcements to cross.
The Merville gun battery had to be put out of action. The 100mm calibre guns could fire down on to Sword Beach and the Allied fleet off the coast.
The bridges across the River Dives had to be destroyed to prevent German reinforcements, arriving from the east, from crossing. The high ground had to be taken and held by the division.
These missions were accomplished with great success before dawn on D-Day but with heavy losses. More than 2000 soldiers lie in peace at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at Ranville several kilometres from the museum.
The extraordinary success of the Memorial de Caen museum lies in the initial resolve of its founder, Mr Jean-Marie Girault. With destruction wreaked across almost three quarters of this martyr city of the Liberation in the summer of 1944, Caen deserved a fitting tribute for the damage it suffered. And such a tribute was paid, but with the focus on what continues to be the Memorial’s running theme: reconciliation. This vocation, unique to the Memorial de Caen museum, will guide you through the museum’s different stages, taking you back over the 20th century.

We are offered a fresh perception in a modern and interactive framework of the causes, events and consequences of World War II through the lens of the Ardennes Counteroffensive – the “Battle of the Bulge”. The Bastogne War Museum covers the Second World War, from its origins up to autumn 1944, and then focuses on the Battle of the Bulge.
Key events of the war and the combatants' ordeal are reproduced here with the aim of clarifying the broad sweep of its history. The centre provides a very clear picture of how the civilians lived during the occupation, during the battle itself, and afterwards.
The many consequences of what was probably one of the most serious battles in world history are very clearly described.Housed in a brand-new building displaying an adventurous architectural concept, the Bastogne War Museum is located on the former Bastogne Historical Centre site. The original set design of this commemorative centre is the latest in modernity. The new journey through the museum is dotted with flashbacks, genuine multi-sensory, three-dimensional scenes in a completely new format.
